The majestic redwood trees can only be found in California and Oregon and here are some great spots for you to find them. Muir Woods National Monument is north of San Francisco and offers a redwood forest with three hiking loops. Rangers offer guided walks and teach you about the forest. Big Basin Redwoods State Park is in the mountains between San Jose and Santa Cruz, and is much less crowded than Muir.

Nature turned the Petrified Redwood Forest to stone just west of Calistoga. East of San Francisco is Mariposa Grove and Yosemite National Park home to huge redwoods. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is located between Crescent City and Eureka. Sequoia National Park is the place to see the largest living trees on earth. Located in Three Rivers, CA this forest has the world’s largest redwood, General Sherman.

The Redwood National Park located on the California and Oregon border, preserves half of the old-growth redwood forests. South from Brookings is Forest Service Road 1101 located in Medford, it is home to Oregon’s remaining 9,000 out of 14,000 redwood forest acres. Brookings Harbor just six miles north of the California border has Loeb State Park, home to Oregon’s largest collection of coastal redwoods. There are many other beautiful parks and hiking areas to experience Oregon and California’s beautiful redwoods.

Majestic and awe-inspiring, the Coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) growing in the coastal forests of Oregon and Northern California pierce the sky. No one who has stood at the feet of these mighty trees can ever forget the experience. Look up, up, up Can you see the top? Because they grow only in groups, or groves, the branches of the trees weave together, creating a canopy that nearly blots out the sky. Many people wonder how tall Coast redwoods commonly grow.

A mature Coast redwood averages 200 feet in height. Many of the taller trees in existence, however, range from 300 to 350 feet.Check out this link here. Redwood trees can be anywhere from 8 to 28 feet in diameter. Scientists speculate, though, that some redwood trees were even taller – reaching heights of almost 400 feet. Several years ago, researchers measured the tallest living Coast redwood at 370 feet. Coast redwood trees can live to be 2000 years old, and because the trees were prized for their beautiful lumber, many of the oldest trees did not survive early logging efforts. Now an endangered species, Coast redwoods are protected in state parks, ensuring that these majestic giants will survive to be seen by future generations.
