What is the Best Time to Visit the Redwoods?

If you are considering a trip to the breathtakingly beautiful Redwood forest but aren’t sure when to visit, the answer is simple – it depends on your tolerance to weather and crowds.

The Redwood forest sits among the warmer California and southwest Oregon climates, which makes spring and summer warm but with a chance of more visitors. During the fall, the evergreen trees stay the stunning green they are during the warmer weather and won’t affect the view. The fall season lends hand to fewer visitors on an average, leaving the option open for those that don’t wish to visit during a more crowded time.

Winter opens up a whole new view in the Redwood forest. With ocean-misted fog, the trees maintain their beauty with temperatures on an average being in the 40-60 degree range. Visitors traveling through the Redwood National Forest area should carry rain gear when hiking or camping through the park during the winter months.

All of the seasons boast beautiful wildlife throughout the Redwood National Park area. Gray whales make their way along the Redwood coast line, as they travel from Baja, California toward Alaska during the fall and winter months. Deer, elk, mountain lions, bobcats, and ravens are just some of the amazing but often elusive wildlife you may come upon during your visit.

Early spring, fall and winter months boast the quieter visiting and exploration times of the year, while the summer is the most common season to visit. With trips through the forest and along the flourishing Pacific coastline, approximately 75,000 visitors come through the Redwood area during the summer months and make their way through sites they will never forget.

Summer visitors can enter the Junior Park Rangers campfire talks, ecology walks and investigate tide pools along the coast, creating the perfect spot for children to visit as they not only see the beauty, but learn about the environment around them as well! The information party rocks on: Day 11, Ride from Eureka, CA to Grants Pass, OR – Grants Pass, OR
